How do you digitize an object that’s more than 70 feet tall? With a drone and a camera. At least that’s how UVA’s Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities is doing it for historic buildings like UVA’s Rotunda and the Alden House.

In this session, Shayne Brandon and Lauren Massari will demonstrate the process of using a DJI Inspire quad-copter to take photographs of a building, turn the photographs into a 3D model, and publish that model to the web using the WebGL JavaScript API.

What You'll Learn:

  • How to use photogrammetry to transfer real objects to the virtual world
  • The role drones can play in historic preservation
  • How to embed a 3D model in a browser using WebGL
